Fasting Reflection 2
Reflection and Prayer
“Absence makes the heart grow fonder” is an ancient proverb. As we wake this morning, we may find that we miss something we would normally have. By forgoing it temporarily, it can make it that much more delightful when we are able to enjoy it again. The experience of not having something for a time can renew our appreciation of it.
A blessing of fasting is that it gives us the opportunity to renew our thanksgiving to God for the blessings we enjoy. We can lose thankfulness through assumed availability. Fasting can give us the opportunity to pause and remember the blessings we might take for granted and express this in thanksgiving to God.
As we begin today let’s take a moment to thank God for the blessings he gives us. Not just for food and drink but also for work and play; for family and friends.

Heavenly Father, we thank you at the start of this day for the many blessings you give us.
We thank you for a new day and a new start.
We thank you for food and drink, for family and friends, for work and rest.
As we give you thanks we also ask for your help.
We receive many blessings and carry many responsibilities.
We bring all this to you, with thanksgiving, asking for wisdom, strength and grace for this day.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
